Nina D. Arutiunova (1923–2018)

Chief Researcher, Section of Theoretical Linguistics

Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, PhD, Dr.habil.

Was employed at the Institute of Linguistics since 1954.

In 1941, she entered the Faculty of Philology of the Chernyshevsky Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature and History; in 1945, she graduated from the Faculty of Philology of the Lomonosov Moscow State University with a degree in English and Western literature.

In 1948, she entered the postgraduate course at the Institute of Language and Thinking of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

On January 13, 1954, she presented her PhD thesis "Complex nouns and ways of their formation in the modern Spanish language".

In 1954, she started working at the Institute of Linguistics in the Section of Romance Linguistics, and in 1962, she transferred to the Section of General Linguistics.

On October 2, 1975, she presented her Dr.habil. thesis "Sentence and its meaning (logical and semantic problems)".

Since 1986, she had been the leader of the problem group "Logical analysis of language".

In 1990, she was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

On numerous occasions, Nina D. Arutiunova delivered lectures and worked at universities in Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, Romania, Sweden, China and other countries.

Arutiunova's research interests include: structure of the Spanish language; problems of morphological theory and of theoretical syntax; questions of the communication theory and dialogue; logical and semantic concepts; stylistics and semiotics, text structure; philosophical and conceptual analysis of the language.

Nina D. Arutiunova died on February 17, 2018 at the age of 95.
