The section deals with describing literary languages, conducting comparative-historical and typological research, studying dialectology and lesser-known Finno-Ugric languages. It also works on dictionaries of written languages, textbooks for schools and universities, language contacts and etymological research etc. The section does an important job coordinating and organising conferences and international congresses of finno-ugrologists. It also participates in the work of the Russian Finno-Ugrologists' Committee. The section is part of an ongoing international (Russia, Finland, Hungary, Germany) research programme "Unified Description of Finno-Ugric (Uralic) Languages" (Aleksandra Siivonen). It also conducted research into how dialectal finno-ugric language systems of different levels shape under ethnocultural interactions between their native speakers (Raisa Batalova).
History
At the time when the Institute of Linguistics was being set up in 1950, the Group for Finno-Ugric Languages was created and then transformed into the Finno-Ugric Languages Section in 1957. The section existed as a separate unit of the Institute until 1990. This essentially meant changing its name either to "Department" or "Laboratory" of Finno-Ugric languages, but practically meant reducing the staff from fourteen people to four. After another "restructuring" of scientific establishments in 1990, the Section, which consisted of two Senior Researchers and one Research Assistant, was merged into the Department of Ural-Altaic Languages with a certain degree of autonomy. Starting from 1950, the Section was headed by Klara Maytinskaia PhD, Dr.habil. (1950-1961), Vasily Lytkin PhD, Dr.habil. (1961-1971), who retired and was replaced by the Institute's director at the time, full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Boris Serebrennikov (1972-1989). After his death, the position was taken by Deputy Director Yuri Eliseev PhD (1989-2010). After that the Section was headed by Raisa Batalova PhD, Dr.habil.

The monographs were written in accordance with the international programme "Unified Description of Finno-Ugric Dialects" and contain full descriptions of particular dialects in accordance with the "Instruction on Unified Description of Uralic Dialects" which was prepared by the Section of Finno-Ugric Languages, published under the supervision of Yuri Eliseev (Moscow, 1986) and approved by the special international committee in Budapest (1988). Monographs are published by the scientific society "Uralo-altaika" (Hamburg) as part of the "Mitteilungen..." series and by the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Nine monographs by researchers from the Finno-Ugric Dialects Section were published in this series in 1993-2010. Ekaterina Deviatkina, Aleksandra Siivonen and A. Solomennikova are continuing their further research into Erzya, Mari and Udmurt dialects.
- Ju.S. Eliseev. Finsko-russkij i russko-finskij slovar’. [Finnish-Russian and Russian-Finnish Dictionary.] Russkij jazyk – Media Publishing. Moscow, 2005.
The dictionary includes words and expressions that are widely used in everyday speech and media, they can be useful for travelling, shopping, for cultural and scientific activities. Moreover, the dictionary is recommended for Finnish learners. The grammar reference, which aids in learning the language, is as extensive as possible for a universal dictionary. Unlike in word-for-word dictionaries, this book uses a nest-like principle of organising information, which allows for a rational use of space and provides a visual illustration of word formation and composition. The Finnish-Russian part of the dictionary practically solves the most difficult grammatical problem for a Russian-speaking learner of Finnish (declination and conjugation) – consonant gradation in word stems. Word forms with sudden changes in stems are put in alphabetical order and contain a reference to their original words.

The research presents a description of the modern state of the Pribelsky dialect of Mari, which is functioning in a foreign environment. The particularities of this dialect are found on all linguistic levels: phonology, morphonology, word formation, morphology, syntax, lexis. Eastern Mari dialects possess a set of distinguishing features relevant to Mari linguistics and to Finno-Ugric studies as a whole.
