History of the Institute: Chronicle

The Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union was established in 1950 in Moscow after the famous "discussion of linguistic issues" against the ideology of the Marrisme. The Institute is created as part of the Department of Literature and Language on the basis of the Marr Institute of Language and Mind in Leningrad (the leading center of theoretical research in the Soviet Union at that time) and the Institute of the Russian Language in Moscow. The Marr Institute of Language and Mind was transformed into the Leningrad Division of the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union. In 1991 it became independent -  the Institute of Linguistic Studies, RAS. The Institute of the Russian Language has worked as an independent Institute since 1958.

The 1950s:

1 July - The Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union decides to request the Council of Ministers of the SU to unite the Marr Institute of Language and Mind and the Institute of the Russian Language into the single Institute of Linguistics.

3 July - The Council of Ministers of the SU issued an executive order.

26 July - a structure of the Institute was approved at the session of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union. It comprises 8 sections (Russian literary language, history of the Russian language and dialectology, vocabulary section of the Russian language, section of the Turkic languages, Caucasian, and Iranian languages, languages of the Peoples of the North, Finno-Ugoric, Romanian, and Germanic languages) and two groups (of classical languages and of the general linguistics). Viktor V. Vinogradov was admitted as the director of the Institute. 

1985 - The Section of the Culture of Speech, the editorial and publishing group, and the Section of Lexicography were established.

1954 - The group of the General Linguistics was abolished; the Section of languages of peoples of the Soviet Union and the Section of General and Comparative Historical Linguistics was crested. Viktor I. Borokovskii was admitted as the director of the Institute.

1956 - The question of re-establishment of the activity of the Institute of the Russian Language was addressed at the meeting of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union. They were decided to establish the Leningrad Division of the Institute on the basis of the Leningrad sections of the Institute of Linguistics. It comprised Sections of Dictionaries of the Russian language, Indo-European languages, Altaic languages, Paleo-Siberian languages.

1957 - They decided to organize the Institute of the Russian Language on the basis of Russian Sections of the Institute of Linguistics at the meeting of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union.

1958 - A new structure of the Institute of Linguistics was confirmed at the meeting of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union. It comprised Sections of the General Linguistics (with the group of Ukrainian and Belarusian languages and the group of Baltic languages), applied linguistics, Turkic languages, Caucasian languages, Iranian languages, Finno-Ugoric, Romanian, Germanic, Romance languages, and editorial and publishing group which works for the Institute of the Russian language. The Leningrad Division of the Institute also included the Section of Indo-European languages, Altaic languages, Paleo-Siberian, and Samoyedic languages.

The 1960s:

1960 - Boris A. Serebrennikov, the director of the Institute. 

1964 - Fedot P. Filin, the director of the Institute. 

1969 - Victoria N. Yartseva, the director of the Institute.
 

The 1970s:

1970 -  Sections of the general linguistics, structural and applied linguistics, Turkic languages, Caucasian, Iranian, Finno-Ugoric, Romanian, and Germanic languages, and socio-linguistics; Groups of Mongolian, African languages, psycholinguistics, and the editorial and publishing group were included in the Institute.

1975 - The Section of the group of African languages was organized. The Institute comprised the group on psycholinguistics and theory of communication; the group on the promotion of integrated works, and the group on the philosophical problems of linguistics. Units that worked in the Leningrad Department are the divisions of Altaic languages, comparative and historical studies of the Indo-European languages, theoretical grammar, Paleo-Siberian languages, vocabulary section, the laboratory of the linguistic technologies. 

1977 - Georgi V. Stepanov, the director of the Institute. 
 

1980-s 

1988 - They decided to organize the Section of Linguistic Problems of Finno-Ugoric peoples of the Northern Institute of Linguistics at the meeting of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union. 

1986 - Vadim M. Solncev, the director of the Institute.
 

1990-s

1991 - The Leningrad Division of the Institute of Linguistics transformed into the Institute of Language Studies of the Academy of Sciences by the decision of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences.

2000-s 

2000 - Viktor V. Vinogradov, the director of the Institute.

2010-s

2012 - Vladimir M. Alpatov, the director of the Institute. 

2017 - Andrei A. Kibrik became the director of the Institute.
