Antonina Koval (1938–2017)

Leading Researcher, Department of African Languages

PhD

Had been employed at the Institute of Linguistics since 1971.

Research interests:
African studies, the Fula language, typology, oral literature, socio- and ethnolinguistics.

Graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University, Faculty of Philology.
Worked at VINITI (Russian National Institute of Scientific and Technological Information, RAS), Department of Semiotics in 1963-1971.
Earned her PhD degree in 1976, thesis Semantic and grammatical principles of noun classification in Fula (Fouta Djallon dialect). Мoscow, Institute of Linguistics, USSR Academy of Sciences, 1976.

Published 150 academic papers.

Editor of the "Studies of the Languages of Africa" ongoing series (issues of 1995, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2013, 2015).
Permanent member of the organizing committee for linguistic sections of triennial Africanist international conferences (the last conference was held in May 2014).

Teaching career:

Delivered lectures on African studies, Fula studies, and typology in Moscow State Linguistic University, Lomonosov Moscow State University (Institute of African and Asian Studies), Russian State University of Humanities. Taught foreign languages at institutions of general education.

2005-2008 – served as a research advisor for student term papers at the Faculty of Philology, MSU.
2008-2009 – served as a research advisor for a diploma work at Faculty of Philology, MSU.
2014-2015 – served as a research advisor for a student term paper at the School of Linguistics, Faculty of Humanities, Higher School of Economics.

Antonina Koval passed away on May 17th, 2017, at the age of 78 years.
