Anna Zalizniak

Chief Researcher, Section of Typology

PhD, Dr.habil.

Employed at the Institute of Linguistics since 1985.

In 1981, she graduated from the Division of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, the Faculty of Philology of the Lomonosov Moscow State University. From 1981 to 1984, she was a post-graduate student at the Institute of Linguistics in the Russian Academy of Sciences (the section of Romance languages). In 1985, she presented her PhD thesis "Funkcional'naja semantika predikatov vnutrennego sostojanija (na materiale francuzskogo jazyka)" [Functional semantics of inner state predicates (based on the material of the French language)] with Elena Volf as a Research Supervisor. Since 1985, Zalizniak is an employee at the Institute of Linguistics in the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since 1986, she is a member of the task group "Logical analysis of the language" (needed by Nina Arutiunova). Since 2001, she is a part of the task group on grammar theory (with Vladimir Plungian as a head). Throughout the years, she has taught and delivered lectures in a number of universities in France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark and Australia.

In 2003, Anna Zalizniak presented her Dr.habil. thesis "Mnogoznačnost' v jazyke i sposoby eё predstavlenija" [Polysemy in the language and the ways of its manifestation]. She is an author of more than 200 scientific works, including 9 monographs. She is the head of the "Database of Semantic Shifts in languages of the world" project.

Zalizniak's research interests include synchronic and diachronic lexical semantics, semantic typology, Russian aspectology, Russian language, Romance and Germanic languages, morphological derivation, discourse language units, linguistic databases, corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistics.
