Аннотация доклада
A fundamental question underlying most work in linguistics is why languages are the way they are. How much is due to an abstract genetic endowment, design features universal to all humans, and how much is the product of general cognitive abilities such as categorization, abstraction, routinization, extension, learnability, etc.? Could there be other factors as well? Our answers depend heavily on which aspects of language we are seeking to explain, but conversely, our theories determine in good part which aspects of language we pay attention to. Here some grammatical distinctions are examined which show non-random geographical distributions over the globe. Languages indigenous to California and adjacent areas of the North American West show tremendous genealogical diversity, but many share certain fundamental structural features. They provide a rich arena for exploring the role of contact in shaping grammar, particularly when the diachronic dimension is added.
