Valentina Postovalova

Employed at the Institute of Linguistics since 1967.

Led the special group "Philosophical questions in linguistics" at the Institute in 1988-1994.

Member of the editorial board for the scientific journal "Metafizika" [Metaphysics], section "Liberal cognition and education" since 2014. The journal is peer-reviewed at the Higher Attestation Commission since 2016.

Education and theses

Graduated cum laude from the Rostov Pedagogical Institute, Faculty of the Russian Language, Literature, and the German Language. Did her postgraduate studies at the Institute of Linguistics RAS, General Linguistics major. Earned her PhD degree in 1967, thesis Fonologičeskaja struktura sloga (K metodike opisanija) [The phonological structure of a syllable (on the description methodology)]. Earned her Dr.habil. degree in 1989, thesis Lingvističeskaja gipoteza i ee obosnovanie [Linguistic hypothesis and its justification].

Research interests: phonology, linguistic philosophy, historiography of linguistics, hermeneutics, religious philosophy, conceptology, theology in linguistics.

Main lines of research: methodology of the scientific knowledge. Integral paradigms and directions of research in liberal arts. Linguistic aspects of a religious perspective and spiritual experiences (specifically Orthodox Christianity). History and hermeneutics of the philosophy of linguistics and main works of the field (Wilheld Humboldt and his doctrine, linguistic relativity hypothesis, Ferdinand de Saussure and his school of thought, Alexei Losev and the Russian uni-totality philosophy). Analytical descriptions of linguistic and meta-linguistic views of modern Russian linguists (Tatyana Bulygina, Alexander Reformatsky, Boris Serebrennikov, Yuri Stepanov, Veronika Teliya).
