Vida Mikhalchenko

Deputy Department Head, Chief Researcher, Research Center on Ethnic and Language Relations

PhD, Dr.habil., Prof.

Employed at the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1970. Having started as a Junior Researcher, she has served as the Head of the Research Center on Ethnic and Language Relations and the Deputy Director of Research of the Institute of Linguistics.

Vida Mikhalchenko has published more than 250 works. Among them are two monographs. Her research interests include syntactic typology, sociolinguistics, Russian studies, Baltic languages. She co-authored some of the fundamental works of the Research Center on Ethnic and Language Relations, completed with the valuable insight and collaboration of the international colleagues: "Written languages of the world. Languages of the Russian Federation" (2 volumes, in collaboration with Canadian scholars), database "Minority languages of Russia" (with Japanese scholars for the Council of Europe, Russian and English editions), "The function of languages in a multiethnic country: Russia and Vietnam" (with input from Vietnamese colleagues). As of today, the Research Center on Ethnic and Language Relations is preparing a Russian-Mongolian collective work "National languages in the era of globalization". Members of the Center, led by Vida Mikhalchenko, have completed the development of the "Theoretical inquiries of sociolinguistics" academic paper and are currently working on the "Language and society", a sociolinguistics encyclopedia.

Vida Mikhalchenko served as an instructor and research advisor for a number of scholars writing their PhD and Dr.habil. theses. She is an active participant and organizer of international conferences ("Language and society at the threshold of a new millennium", 2000; "Language and society in contemporary Russia and the worlds", 2010; "Language and culture", etc.) She is the deputy editor-in-chief for the "Questions of Philology" scientific journal. Vida Mikhalchenko delivers lectures in higher education institutions (Sociolinguistics; Introduction to Linguistics).
