Zarema Kochakaeva was born in Dagestan in 1976. In 1993, she entered the Russian-Dagestan Department of the Philological Faculty at Dagestan State Pedagogical University. In 1998, she graduated from the specialisation "philology, teaching the native language and literature with the right to teach the Russian language and literature.'
In 2003, she entered postgraduate school at the same university and in 2008 she transferred to Dagestan State University. While being in postgrad school, she was working as a teacher of her native language and literature, as well as of the Russian language and literature, in a school in Ullubiyaul, Karabudakhkentsky district, Dagestan.
Under the academic supervision of Nurmagomed Gadzhiakhmedov, Kochakaeva wrote and defended her PhD thesis "Ullubijaul’skij govor kumykskogo jazyka" [The Ullubiyaul dialect of the Kumyk language] (specialisation 10.02.02 "Languages of the peoples of the Russian Federation"). From 2015 to 2019, she worked as a research assistant and junior researcher in the Department of Ural-Altaic Languages at the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (funded by a grant). Since 2020, she has been employed at the Institute as a junior researcher in the Department of Ural-Altaic Languages.

Fieldwork
- 2017 – participant of a phonetical expedition to study the dialectal phonetics of the Nogai language in the Nogai district of Dagestan.
- 2018 – participant of a phonetical expedition to Kabardino-Balkaria to study the dialectal phonetics of the Karachay-Balkar language.
- 2019 – participant of a phonetical expedition to the Kayakent district of Dagestan to study the dialectal phonetics of the Kumyk language.
- From 2019 to 2020 – participant of three phonetical expeditions to the Salsky District (Rostov Oblast), the Narimanovsky District (Astrakhan Oblast), the Adigeni Municipality and the Akhaltsikhe Municipality (Georgia) to study the dialectal phonetics of Meskhetian Turkish.
