Alexandra Sheymovich

Junior Researcher, Academic Secretary, Department of Ural-Altaic Languages

Works at the Institute of Linguistics since 1990.

Alexandra Sheymovich graduated from the Division of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics of the Faculty of Philology of Moscow State University in 1990. She obtained her degree with a thesis on antipassive clause in the Alyutor language. 

Having completed her studies, Alexandra Sheymovich became a research assistant, and later a junior researcher, at the Department of Ural-Altaic Languages of the Institute of Linguistics. Since 2007, she is a de-facto academic secretary of the Department, although Alexandra Sheymovich acted as such from the very beginning of her work at the Institute.

In addition to her research activities at the Department, Alexandra Sheymovich contributed to the prepress preparation of main collective works of the Department, namely "Etymological Dictionary of Turkic Languages", "Comparative Grammar of Turkic Languages. Lexics", etc. 

From 2010 onwards, Alexandra Sheymovich worked at creating electronic corpora of minor Turkic languages (Khakas, Shor, Tuvan). Her duties included linguistic annotation, together with morphological, semantical, and etymological; grammatical description of languages and dialects for their further parsing; etymological, lexicostatistical, phonetic, and grammatical data analysis for the STARLING database program. In recent years, Alexandra Sheymovich has taken active part in annual expeditions on Siberian and Caucasian Turkic languages and dialects documentation (2006; 2012–2019: Khakas, Shor, Tuvan, Altai; 2018: Balkar).

Parallel to her work at the Institute, Alexandra Sheymovich compiled electronic dictionaries and spelling check systems for Russian, English, and French at "Informatic" Ltd. From 1995 till 2009, a Russian spell checker developed by the linguists of "Informatic" Ltd. was incorporated into Russian MS Office versions licensed by Microsoft Corp. 
From 2008 till 2018, Alexandra Sheymovich was involved in linguistic chatbot customization at Nanosemantics Lab, LLC. From 2017 till 2020, she was a researcher at the Laboratory of Linguistic Anthropology at Tomsk State University.
