Department Head, Department of Experimental Study of Speech
Kirill Seagal was born on August 3, in 1973 in Moscow. He is a specialist in general linguistics and Russian linguistics, a PhD, a Chief Researcher, Head of the Department of Experimental Study of Speech at RAS.
In 1995, he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Philology at Moscow Pedagogical State University. In 1999, he defended a PhD thesis 'The problem of iconicity in a language (based on the Russian language)' at the Institute of Linguistics of RAS. In 2004, he defended a Dr.habil. thesis 'Coordinating constructions in a text: Theoretical and experimental research (on the material of a simple sentence)'. He is a disciple of Victor Vinogradov, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Has been working at the Institute of Linguistics of RAS since February, 2003.
His research interests are theory of an experiment in linguistics, syntax, punctuation, metalinguistic and aesthetic aspects of speech activity.
Kirill Seagal has published more than 200 works, including 10 monographs (the full list of his works can be found here).
At the Institute of Linguistics of RAS, he is leading the research work on the State Assignment 'Modern speech studies: theory, experiment, practice'.
In 2014, he was one of the participants of the 'Ethnolinuistics and linguoculturology in literary works of Mikhail Sholokhov' grant project of Russian Foundation for Humanities 14-04-00493. In 2015, a collective monograph of Russian Foundation for Humanities grant 15-04-16154 was published, and Kirill Seagal was responsible for the part 'The peculiarity of syntax and punctuation of Mikhail Sholokhov'.
In 2019-2021, he is one of the grant participants of the project 'Modern Russian axiosphere: semantic and pragmatic transformation of the Russian cultural code', Russian Foundation for Basic Research grant № 19-012-00609\19.
By now, he has supervised 6 theses.
He is a deputy chairman of the Dissertation Council D 002.006.03 at the Institute of Linguistics of RAS and a member of Scientific Council at the Institute of Linguistics of RAS.
He is engaged in popularizing linguistic knowledge. In particular, in the period since 2005 until 2012, he was a regular contributor to the column 'Let's speak correctly' in the 'Antenna-Telesem' weekly magazine.
In 2005-2015, was a professor at the Department of Russian language and a senior researcher of the Sholokhov centre at the Sholokhov Moscow State University for the Humanities.
Since 2002, he teaches a course of experimental linguistics to the graduate students at the Institute of Linguistics of RAS.

This monograph is dedicated to developing theoretical basis of a word-combination in the aspect of speech activity. The research is focused on a speech phenomenology of a word-combination, as well as on a fragment of the speech experience of native speakers that shows their skills of working with word-combinations and reflecting on them. The monograph features theoretical, experimental, and corpus research that aim at explaining how word-combinations function in speech activity.
