Valery Demiankov has been working at the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1988.
In 1971, Valery Demiankov graduated from the Department of Structural and Applied Linguistics of Moscow State University. In 1978, he he earned his PhD degree in which the procedure for converting word combinations of a natural language into the language of numeric indices is analyzed. In 1986, he he defended his Dr.habil. thesis, which is devoted to the development and creation of the original theory of interpretation and its application to the critical analysis of the metalanguage of American linguistics in 1970s and 1980s.
Since 1998 Valery Demiankov has been working at The Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences as Chief Researcher and Department Head of Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics. From 2005 to 2017 was Deputy Director of the Institute. He oversaw the departments of theoretical and applied linguistics, the department of foreign languages, as well as the international scientific relations of the Institute with Western Europe and the USA.
Valery Demiankov has a comprehensive linguistic erudition. He is very creatively active and is characterized by the depth of research of the most difficult scientific tasks. He is not only a brilliant linguist and theoretic but also the polyglot who speaks more than 50 languages of the world. His research interests are multi-faceted. Computational linguistics and typological study of languages using computer technology, interpretation theory, theoretical linguistics, syntax and semantics of the Russian language, linguistic metalanguage of the 21st century, cognitive linguistics, lexicography - it is still not a full list of the research areas to which he contributes.
Valery Demiankov has published more than 380 scientific works, including 8 monographs and vocabularies. Many linguists know his monographs like "Foundations of The Theory of Interpretation and its Applications in Computational Linguistics" (1985); "Special Theories of Interpretation in Computational Linguistics" (1988); "Interpretation, Understanding and Linguistic Aspects of Their Computer Modelling" (1989), "Morphological Interpretation of The Text and its Modeling" (1994), etc. His scientific works are devoted to the major general problems of linguists: philosophy of a language, metalanguage of linguists, theory of interpretation and typology, theory of speech acts, problems of cognitive linguists; and are the great interest to specialists. The works of the scientist in sphere of oral communication (the efficiency of argumentation, strategies of attainment of understanding in a dialogue, the roles of social prejudices in interpersonal communication) are relevant. The dictionary "English-Russian Terms in Applied Linguistics and Automatic Text Processing" as well as numerous articles published in encyclopedic dictionaries, contributed to the development of Russian lexicography. It should be noted that the scientist is interested in the problems of cognitive linguistic. He participated in creating the "Concise Dictionary of Cognitive Terms" as well as other articles related to the understanding the term "concept" and considering some concepts in Russian and Western European languages.
He was awarded the title "Honorary Worker of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation".
Valery Demiankov is the editor-in-chief of the journal "Social and Humanitarian Sciences. Linguistics" (INION RAS), and is also a member of the editorial boards of the journals "Topics in the study of language", "Issues of Cognitive Linguistics", and "Questions of Philology".
