Since 1965, Igor Kormushin is a Researcher of the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Igor Kormushin was born on January 25, 1939 in Leningrad/Saint-Petersburg in a family of students. During the War, he lived with his mother in evacuation in the Far-East and Vladivostok. After the War, he returned to Leningrad, where he studied at the secondary schools No. 159 and No. 68, from which in 1956 he graduated. For a year he had been working at the factory as a fitter's apprentice, fitter, rigger and studied at the preparatory courses at the Leningrad State University by A.A. Zhdanov.
In 1957, Igor Kormushin entered the Department of Turkic philology of Faculty of Asian and African Studies of Leningrad State University and in 1962, graduated with the qualification of an orientalist-philologist. During the studies, he attended lectures and was studying with famous Turkologists, Iranianists and Arabianists. He passed one-year internship in Bulgaria at the Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". He took classes of Turkish language and Ottoman diplomacy.
In 1962, Igor Kormushin was admitted to the postgraduate studies of the Leningrad Department of the Institute of Linguistics in specialization "Altaistics" where he studied the Tungus-Manchu and Mongolian languages and read ancient Turkic texts.
While studying at the postgraduate school, in the summer of 1964, he went on his first linguo-ethnographic expedition in the Far East of Russia to the regions of the Udege people to collect linguistic materials for the development of "The comparative dictionary of the Tungus-Manchu Languages". The materials collected by Kormushin supplemented the basis of the Udege glossary and were included in "The comparative dictionary of the Tungus-Manchu Languages". Later on, in 1998, they were published as a separate book: "Udege language. Materials of ethnography. Outline of phonetics and grammar. Texts and Translations. Dictionary." During his studies, he was also a part of the group engaged in the creation of "The Ancient Türkic Dictionary".
In 1965, after completing his postgraduate studies, Igor Kormushin was admitted to the staff of the Institute of Linguistics of the USSR Academy of Sciences where he works to the present. He went through all stages of the academic career, from Junior Researcher to Senior (1985), Leading (1992) and Chief (1998) Researcher.
In 1969, in Leningrad, he defended his PhD thesis in the specialization "Languages of the USSR peoples" – "The category of Causative in the Altai languages". In 1991, in Moscow, he defended his Dr.habil. thesis in two specializations "General linguistics" and "Turkic Languages" – "Problems of the reconstruction of the Proto-Turkic verb: temporal system, its origins and transformations".
In 2002, Igor Kormushin was awarded the title of Professor.
From 1964 to 2017, Igor Kormushin conducted more than 30 linguistic and epigraphic expeditions to the regions of the Far East, Khakassia, Tuva and Mongolia. He participated in a number of projects under the programs of fundamental research of the Presidium and the Department of Historical and Philological Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences
Since 1986 Igor Kormushin has been Scientific Secretary of the Russian Committee of Turkologists.In 2007, he was validated as the chairman of the Russian Committee of Turkologists at the Department of Historical and Philological Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In 1997, Igor Kormushin as a member of the team of Turkologists of the Department of Ural-Altai languages of the Department of Foreign Languages of RAS became a laureate of the Abdel Aziz Saud Al-Babtin Premium (Kuwait). In 2000 he was elected an Honorary Member of Turkish Linguistic Society (Türk Dil Kurumu).
In 2003, he was awarded the title of "Honorary Worker of Professional Higher Education of Russian Federation".
In 2009, he was awarded the title of "Honored Scientist of the Republic of Tuva".
In 2018, he has been elected the editor-in-chief of the journal "Russian Turkology".
