Olga Gulyga

Senior Researcher, Section of Romance languages

PhD

Employed at the Institute of Linguistics since 1988.

Education: Lomonosov State University of Moscow, Faculty of Philology, Division of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics (1970-1975). Pursued graduate education at the Department of Caucasian Languages, Institute of Linguistics. Earned her PhD degree in 1979, thesis "Inclusive and exclusive personal pronouns in the East Caucasian languages", with Alexander Kibrik and Sandro Kodzasov's typology of the East Caucasian languages used as a framework, as well as Georgy Klimov's contensive typology. Was employed at the Laboratory for French-Russian Machine Translation of the All-Union Centre of Translation in 1979-1988. While there, she composed dictionary entries for the automated Explanatory combinatorial dictionary of the French language and adapted pronouns usage rules for the automated translation. Employed at the Section of Romance languages, Institute of Linguistics RAS, since 1988. Up until the 2010s was engaged with the functional semantics and the emergence of the literary variants of the Romance languages, two main lines of research for the Section. Considered the typology of semantics and the communicative syntax of the French language; worked to describe the Occitan language, one of the minority Romance languages. Current research interests lie in the discovery and description of the specific economical principles employed by the French language when denoting the referent. When used without the situational context, these can cause homonymy, which in turn leads to a heavy reliance on the context. At the same time, these linguistic devices are independent when considering the communicative and the modal components, their meaning having an effect on the wider context in a rather sophisticated way.

Participated in the composition of the "Romance Languages" volume of the "Languages of the World" encyclopedia. Co-author of the "French language" entry, compiler of the language and subject indices, technical editor for a number of articles.

An active participant of All-Russian and international conferences. Among them are "Stepanovskie chteniya" (RUDN university, held biannually), "Logical linguistic analysis" (Institute of Linguistics RAS), "The theory and history of Germanic and Romance languages in the contemporary higher education in Russia" (Kaluga State University, held biannually).
