The Section of Typology was established in October 2004 as part of the Task Group for Grammatical Theory and is based upon long-standing traditions of typological study of world languages, which were conducted at the Institute since the day of its foundation.
Until 2011 the Section of Typology was part of the Department of Typology and General Comparativie Studies, and in May 2011 it was integrated into a new structural unit of the Institute – the Department of Typology and Areal Linguistics.
Apart from scientific tasks, the Section of Typology is responsible for organisational aspects, such as coordinating research in grammatical theory, grammatical and semantic typology. Researchers from this department actively participate in the ongoing edition of "Research in Grammatical Theory" (a compilation of works authored by the members of the Task Group for Grammatical Theory). Along with Pushkin State Russian Language Institute and Moscow State University, the section is among the organisers of the international conference "Typology of Morphosyntactic Parameters".
The section hosts postgraduate students.
