Zarema Ekba was born in 1973 in Moscow. After graduation from school №939 in 1990, she entered the Russian Department of the Faculty of Philology of Lomonosov Moscow State University. In 1995 Zarema graduated from University, specialisation – philologist, teacher of Russian language and literature, teacher of Russian as a foreign language. That year she entered the graduate school of the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Simultaneously with her postgraduate studies, Zarema Ekba worked as a teacher of Russian as a foreign language in language courses.
Under the supervision of the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences E. Tenishev, Zarema defended her Ph.D. thesis Arabic and Persian loanwords in the Bashkir language (1997), (specialisation 10.02.06 "Turkic languages"). From 1997 to the present time, she has been working at the Department of Ural-Altaic Languages at the Institute of Linguistics, Russian Academy of Sciences.
Since 2010, Zarema Ekba has been Academic Secretary of the Russian Committee of Turkic Studies at the Department of Historical and Philological Sciences. Annually she takes part in organizing the meetings of the committee and the "Teniševskie čtenija". Zarema Ekba holds full records of the work of the committee of Turkologists. Since 2018, after the handover of the journal "Rossijskaja tjurkologija" [Russian Turkish Studies] to the Institute of Linguistics, she coordinates the work of the editorial board of this journal. She is also its scientific and production editor.
Zarema is fluent in 2 Turkic languages – Bashkir and Turkish. She has also more than 50 published works.
Research interests: Turkic lexicology, Turkic lexicography, ethnolinguistics, language relationships, history of Turkic languages.
