I. Stenin (Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences), O. Volkov (Moscow State University). The Itelmen language and the linguistic situation in Kamchatka
Itelmen is one of the languages on the verge of extinction. There are no more than ten speakers of the Itelmen language, all of whom live in the Kamchatka Territory. In addition to the Itelmens, Kamchatka is also home to speakers of the Koryak, Alutor, Even and Chukchi languages.
The paper will present the materials collected by the authors in Kamchatka in the winter of 2014. It will first focus on the degree of preservation of the Itelmen language, on its speakers, and on some of its typological features. The dialectal composition of the Koryak language and the general sociolinguistic situation in Kamchatka will also be discussed.
The expedition was supported by the Fund for Fundamental Linguistic Research.
