He was born on May 24, 1971, in a town in the Zabaikalye Territory.
In adolescence, he was interested in foreign languages and tried to learn Czech, Finnish, Hungarian and Chinese.

He graduated from Transbaikal State University (Chita), Department of Foreign Languages, Sino-English Section in 1998 (Diploma with honours). Qualification: Teacher of Chinese and English languages. Тhe referent-interpreter of the Chinese language with a degree in philology.
Graduation thesis: Dialektizmy areala goroda Pekina v xudožestvennom literaturnom tekste na jazyke putunxua (na materiale romana Xo Da «Musul’manskie poxorony» [Dialectisms of the Beijing City Areal in a Fiction Literary Text in the Mandarin Language (based on Ho Da's novel "Muslim Funeral"), Chita, 1998].
In 1999 – 2000 he worked at Transbaikal State University (Chita) as an assistant of the Chinese language Department at the Faculty of Foreign Languages. He taught practical Chinese classes: practical grammar, speaking and writing.
August 2001 – November 2005 – Nikolay worked at Tomsk Polytechnic University in the Department of Language Communication as a senior teacher, since 2004 as an assistant professor. He conducted classes in practical Chinese language (course – 620100 linguistics and intercultural communication, specialisation 022900 – Translation and Translation Studies, qualification – linguist-translator) at the Faculty of Humanities of TPU (specialisation 350300 – "Regional studies", qualification – area studies professional), the Department of International Management of TPU. During his work at TPU Nikolay Voropaev carried out a variety of educational and methodological works, including the development of new curricula, practical classes and lectures in all disciplines, which included the Chinese language: practical Chinese grammar, speech practice, theoretical phonetics, theoretical grammar, basics of translation, consecutive interpretation, pre-translation analysis of the text, lexicology, history of language and introduction to special philology, introduction to simultaneous interpretation, stylistics, practical phonetics.
2005-2008 – Nikolay completed full-time postgraduate studies at the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Department of Languages of East and Southeast Asia, scientific supervisor - Ksenia Antonyan, Ph.D). Specialisation 10.02.22 – Languages of the Peoples of Foreign Countries of Europe, Asia, Africa, indigenous ethnic groups of America and Australia (Chinese).
March 2012 – Ph.D. thesis «Precedentnye imena v kitajskojazyčnom diskurse» [Precedent names in Chinese-language discourse]. The abstract of the dissertation is available on the website.
November 2011 – December 2012 – Nikolay Voropaev worked as a senior teacher of the Chinese language at the Department of Foreign Languages at The Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA).
Research interests: Chinese language, Chinese language teaching methods, translation studies, phraseology, cultural linguistics, psycholinguistics.
The scientific works of Nikolay Voropaev are devoted to the study of Chinese phraseology based on the theory of precedence. He studied the phenomenon of precedence and the peculiarities of its manifestation in the Chinese language and culture, as well as developed a basic set of precedent names and a methodology for their description. He also compiled reference books of precedent names and related phraseological units of various types. A connection was established between the phenomenon of precedent, studied in European linguistics and cultural studies, and the phenomenon of djan’gu [djangu], identified and studied in traditional Chinese philology.
Nikolay Voropaev has been collaborating with publishing houses (since 2012).
Nikolay Voropaev has been a practising interpreter from the Chinese language (consecutive and simultaneous interpretation) (since 1997).
He has been a member of The National League of Translators and Interpreters (since 2012).
